Black Friday and Cyber Monday (BFCM) need no introduction to those in retail and e-commerce. Despite its origins in the United States, BFCM has quickly become one of the most anticipated events for both consumers and retailers globally. As the holiday season approaches each year, it is hard to miss these annual BFCM sales regardless of where you are in the world.

With this in mind, our media partner, Parcel Monitor, has taken a closer look at the state of e-commerce in Europe during the most recent BFCM. How did the latest peak season fare given the ongoing supply chain crunch on top of the uncertainties surrounding the pandemic situation? Here is what they found:

  1. Parcel volume in Europe only increased by 69.7% during the peak shopping season in 2021, as compared to the 93.9% growth observed in the year before.
  2. Transit time for deliveries in Europe improved year-on-year with only a slight delay around the BFCM period.
  3. According to Wolfgang Lehmacher, Former Head of Supply Chain and Transport at the World Economic Forum, the e-commerce sector is expected to maintain its strong growth in 2022, possibly surpassing 2020 and 2021 collectively.
