During the COVID-19 Pandemic, which started in the first quarter of 2020, the supply chain ecosystem at large has seen lots of disruptions. From the company’s operations and finance to its organizational structure, everything had to be adjusted to fit the situation of the pandemic. This event tested different organization’s resiliency, flexibility, and agility. While a lot has struggled to cope with the crisis, many saw this as an opportunity; opportunity to innovate, redesign, restructure and integrate technology.

We have also seen leaders step up their game, give their two cents at different matters, and actually see plans from the past come to life. One of the most prominent examples is that of Chief Operations Officers (COOs) and Chief Supply Chain Officers (CSCOs) and according to the article by Forbes, here are three reasons why they are fit to become great CEOs:

1. Operations and supply chains make or break businesses

“COOs and CSCOs have already experienced the need to build organizational resilience and lay foundations for growth and new business models.”

COOs and CSCOs are naturally resilient and flexible leaders as they oversee the day-to-day operations of the business. They also respond to disruptions as quickly as they emerge and they value collaboration among others, one of the qualities needed during this time of pandemic and one that future CEOs need.

2. Leading digital transformation

One of the things that organizations sought to do during this pandemic is the integration of technology into their operations. As face-to-face is limited today, technology is indeed prevalent in any sector of the economy and in the supply chain, a must. An important aspect that COOs and CSCOs understand remarkably.

3. Addressing balanced stakeholder capitalism

“COOs and CSCOs are delivering on the balanced stakeholder capitalism promise and imperative. They not only know the importance of this promise, they also know “how to” transform businesses in order to make it happen.”

Being able to adapt and being flexible is valuable in our situation today- adjusting to the “new normal”. And while organizations are doing it there are metrics that need to be taken into account like sustainability, revenue and people.

To conclude, COOs and CSCOs are leaders who not only oversee the day-to-day operations of an organization or maintain a team to resolve problems encountered in a company. But most importantly, they are flexible, receptive, agile leaders of an organization. They possess skills that leaders need especially during a crisis or when there is a disruption; skills that CEOs of the future needs.
