Top 10 Airports by Cargo Volume in 2023 vs 2019

Cargo traffic remains highly concentrated in the world’s major hub airports. In 2023, the top 20 airports handled approximately 42% (47.9 million tonnes) of global volumes, and they maintain their dominance due to their infrastructure, strategic trade locations, and capacity for efficient large-volume handling.

Global air cargo volumes decreased by 1.8% year over year in 2023, reaching approximately 115 million tonnes. Although this figure represents a 4.9% decrease from pre-pandemic levels, it exceeds the 6-8% decline forecasted by ACI World in 2022.

In 2023, the top 20 airports handled around 42% of global cargo traffic, maintaining their dominance due to their strategic locations, efficient infrastructure, and high-volume handling capabilities.

Projections indicate that by the end of 2024, cargo traffic should have nearly rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, with an estimated 4.8% increase over 2019 volumes by 2025. E-commerce continues to propel growth, especially at airports like Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, which houses Amazon Air and DHL hubs.
