With the aim to provide insights into what has changed in the airfreight forwarders industry in the year 2020 as compared to the pre-pandemic time, we have compared the metric tons of air cargo compiled by Transport Topics News, at the end of 2019 respectively at the end of 2020.
The list is dominated by European companies; the new entry to the top 10 of airfreight forwarders in 2020 being Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, a German company.
Volumes transported decreased in 2020, as compared to those in 2019. For the Top 10 players, the decrease was at close to half a million metric tons.
The top three airfreight forwarders, DHL, Kuehne + Nagel, and DB Shenker have kept their ranking. The most significant jump in ranking is seen for DSV, from top 8 to top 4, as a result of Panalpina acquisition. However, the combined airfreight volume for DSV and Panalpina in 2019 was 0.65 M metric tons higher than the volume transported in 2020.
