Did you know that in 2021, almost every seventh euro available to German households was spent on online purchases?
As with nearly every other country in the world, Germany witnessed unprecedented growth in e-commerce over the course of the pandemic. Gross online sales in 2021 amounted to a total of 99.1 billion euros, representing a 19% increase from the year before. Moreover, in tandem with the e-commerce boom, out-of-home delivery methods like parcel lockers and collection points have gained popularity across the country. Today, Deutsche Post alone operates approximately 8,500 automated parcel machines, with plans to increase that number to 12,500 by 2023.
Is home delivery still the default among German customers? How does Germany’s adoption rate of collection points compare to its neighbors? What is the preferred time slot for Germans to do their parcel pickups? These are just some questions that our media partner, Parcel Monitor, attempted to answer in their recent benchmarking report.
